“The Jewel of Corinth,” The Queen said, coming into the dining room and startling Brenna while she was eating her breakfast. She almost choked on her bread, her cheeks filling with heat. She hadn’t seen the Queen since she fell asleep in her bed the day before. When she’d awoken, alone and confused, her body aching and desire once again raging through her, she’d been disappointed and relieved at the same time to find herself alone.

“Good morning, mistress,” Brenna said, instead.

Her eyes narrowed, a warning. “It’s what your father is going to give me for your return,” she said, practically vibrating with nervous energy.

It took a moment for Brenna to process this. “It’s only been two days,” she said dully.

“Your father is quite rightly concerned for your welfare apparently. I’d expected it would have taken another day, at least for him to send word.”

“Will you… accept?” Brenna asked already knowing the answer. The jewel her father was offering was infamous, renowned throughout the lands. How could this be happening so soon?

The Queen continued to move around the room like a caged animal. Brenna didn’t dare take her eyes off of her.

“Why wouldn’t I? It’s a powerful source of magic. Did you know that, little girl? That the magic comes from the stones? I’ve coveted it ever since it came into your family’s possession.”

It felt like she swallowed lead. “Is that why you took me? Not because—” Brenna couldn’t say it. It sounded stupid.

“Finish your sentence,” The Queen demanded.

She could only shake her head. It was impossible to ask the Queen if she’d been taken because the Queen desired her. The answer was obvious, wasn’t it? She’d been in the wrong place at the wrong time. The things which were happening between them… maybe this is how the Queen treated all of her prisoners. Although it seemed a bit unlikely.

There was a crumb on her dress and she wiped it off, eyes blurring. When she’d gotten back to her room, she’d found dresses and clothing on the bed. The dress she was wearing now, a sky blue silk that matched her eyes, was her favorite.

She’d worn it because she thought the Queen would like it. She’d felt giddy at the possibility that the Queen had picked this out for her, taken the time and effort to get Brenna’s clothes. But that was ridiculous. She was a prisoner, worth less than a jewel and her time here would be over before the sun set.

Brenna took the fine linen napkin from her lap and laid it neatly on the table, wanting to go back to her room and be alone.

Pain surged through her scalp as the Queen took a fistful of Brenna’s hair, forcing her head back. A mewl came from her throat as her fingers sank into arms of the chairs. She took a deep breath, her eyes seeking out the Queen’s.

“I asked you a question. You will answer it. I’ve not let you go yet, little princess.”

She licked her lips, another deep breath, every movement tracked by those bottomless dark eyes.
